Shores wants special meeting of Kanawha parks board

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County Commissioner Hoppy Shores has asked for a special meeting of the Kanawha County Parks and Recreation Commission.

Earlier this week, logger David Russell Bowen was acquitted in Kanawha County Circuit Court of allegations that he stole timber from Coonskin Park in May and June 2013.

Bowen had made an agreement with Hutchinson to clean up logs and debris left over from the 2012 derecho storm that ripped through the park. There was no written contract for the work. Hutchinson and parks board members said Bowen was to cut down 31 trees as part of the agreement, but Bowen cut down 360 trees.

“I feel this is a failure of the management of Coonskin Park, and there is no excuse for this,” Shores said. “The Kanahwa County Commission has a policy to bid out all projects. I will be sending a letter to all board members reminding them of our purchasing procedures.

Shores is the Kanawha County Commission’s representative on the Parks and Recreation Commission but is not a voting member of the board. Shores said Friday he would ask Parks and Recreation Commission President Allen Tackett to call a special meeting of the parks board.
