Church activities: Aug. 30, 2014

Homecoming

Alta Church of God, Alta, will have its Homecoming services on Sept. 14 at the church. Sunday school will begin at 10 a.m. and dinner will be served at noon. The afternoon service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Jason and Michelle Bodkins and others will sing. Tobby Mitchell will preach. Pastor is Paul E. Young.

Ivydale Baptist Church, 2331 Middle Fork Drive, will have its Homecoming 2014 celebration on Sept. 7. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. Pastor Tyler Long will speak at the 11 a.m. morning worship service. Praise and singing will continue in the afternoon. The Humphrey’s will sing at the evening worship service at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served after the morning service. Bible study will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

Miscellaneous

Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 2150 Mount Vernon Road, Hurricane, has scheduled a men’s prayer breakfast for 8:30 a.m., Sept.13 at the church. The speaker will be Tim Britton, area representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Persons who plan to attend are to sign the attendance sheet in the church Welcome Center/Narthex, or call the church office at 304-757-9110 by Sept. 11. The Rev. Ron McClung is the senior pastor, and Jay Samples is the prayer breakfast coordinator. Mount Vernon Baptist Church is located near Exit 39 (Teays Valley) off Interstate 64.

The Religious Coalition for Community Renewal will have its annual Bean and Cornbread Dinner at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 at United Disciples of Christ Church, 100 United Disciples Drive, South Charleston. This year’s honoree is Mary Jean Davis, presently an at-large member of City Council serving on the Finance, Public Safety committees. She is also chairperson of the Planning Committee. Davis will be recognized for her commitment to those persons in our community who are in need of a helping hand. Entertainment will be provided by David Loyd. A silent auction will be held. Tickets can be purchased from any board member or staff of RCCR or call 304-346-6398.

Back to School/Back to Sunday School Day will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Cedar Grove. Bring school supplies to be given to the local community school. A Fellowship Dinner will be held immediately following the morning worship service. Pastor is H.B. White Jr.

The Achiever’s Class of the Fifth Avenue Church of God in South Charleston will not be open in September. The Closet will reopen from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 18 with fall and winter clothing for those in need. Please enter the church at the E Street entrance next to the parking lot. The Minister’s Wives of Charleston and vicinity will have their “Ladies Evening Out 5th Sunday Extravaganza” at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Charleston Marriott, 200 Lee St. Dinner, fellowship, door prizes and more will be featured. The Lay Academy of Religion of First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, will provide free studies about religion and science and how they relate to each other beginning at 4 p.m. Sept. 7 in the church activities building, Room 201. St. Paul United Methodist Church in Spring Hill will resume its open gym activity for area youth. The open gym is 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays at St. Paul Parish House, 4606 Kanawha Turnpike. Music

The West Virginia Mountain State Gospel Singers Corporation continues their August Gospel Sing Saturday, Aug. 30, and Sunday at their Mount Nebo convention grounds in Nicholas County. All singers are welcome. There is free tent and travel trailer camping during the sing. However, donations are accepted. The Labor Day weekend sing features an open mike for soloists, duets, trios and quartets at 7 p.m. nightly. The final West Virginia Mountain State “By Invitation Only” Gospel Sing will be held on Sept. 6. These groups are specifically invited by the Convention Board Members. The convention grounds are located five miles south of Summersville, Nicholas County, off U.S. 19. Follow W.Va. 129, East 1.5 miles. Ron Pauley, singer/pianist will be performing at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Starcher Baptist Church, 6th Avenue and 26th Street, North Charleston.

The Family Five from Bassett, Virginia, will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at The Father’s House Missionary Baptist Church, located at 500 29th Street. The Rev. Dr. Lloyd A Hill is pastor.

Harry Campbell will sing at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at Lucy Wilson Baptist Church, Wills Creek, Elkview.

The Believers will be singing at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Georges Creek Missionary Baptist Church on Georges Creek Road near Rand. They will sing at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Fairview Baptist Church on Gabe Road near Clendenin.

A Celebration of Life Benefit Sing will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 6 at Southeast Nazarene Church. The sing is to help the family of Randy Wood, who recently passed away. A hot dog sale will start at 4 p.m. Singers will be the Praisemen and the Faith Harmony Boys, among others. Donations can also be sent to P.O, Box 41, Hernshaw.

Heavens Trio will sing at 6 p.m. Sunday at Parsons Chapel, Sixth Avenue.

Hobbs Family Singers will sing at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Reamer Hill Community Church, Leatherwood Road, Clendenin.

Rallies/revivals

Spirit Life Fellowship Church, 137 6th Street, Dunbar, will host a Fresh Fire Explosion at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 and 6 at the church. The event is sponsored by Fresh Fire Ministries, Prophet B.K. Thompson, Visionary. Guest speaker on Sept. 5 will be Pastor Travis McCracken, along with the congregation of New Life Center, Cedar Grove. The speaker on Sept. 6 will be Prophet B.K. Thompson. Special music ministry will be featured nightly.

West Virginia Fall Camp Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. nightly, Oct. 9 with Jeff and Sheri Easter and Oct. 10 with the McKamey’s at the Alban Arts and Conference Center (Alban Theater) 65 Olde Main St., St. Albans. King of Glory International Ministries presents “I Lived to Tell It” on Sept. 12-14 at its location, 302 Delaware Ave. The Glory Invasion will feature Pastor Rena Perozich of Morgantown at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12; first lady Erica McNeil of Fairmont at 10 a.m. Sept. 13; Minister Matt Austin of Charleston, noon on Aug. 13; Elder Mark Walker of Richmond, Virginia, at 11 a.m. on Sept. 14 and Alexis Spight, BET’s Sunday’s Best Runner Up, at 4 p.m. on Sept. 14. Reamer Hill Community Church on Leatherwood Road in Clendenin will have revival services at 7 p.m. nightly, Monday, Sept. 1, through Wednesday (or longer). Evangelist will be Michael Shamblin, and guest singers beginning at 7 p.m. will be Paul and Mary Nichols, the Holy Family and Larry Derrix.

Spirit Life Fellowship Church, 137 6th Street, Dunbar, will host the Second Annual Prayer, Praise and Worship Encounter from noon to 4 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Dunbar Plaza, located next to the Dunbar Library. Good Shepherd Free Will Baptist Church, 5470 West Pea Ridge Road, Huntington, will have a praise and worship service on Sunday, Aug. 31. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. with preaching at 11 a.m. by the Rev. J.R. Stewart. Sunday evening service will feature Pastor Jason C. Black at 6 p.m. Sunday with the church choir singing. Choir practice starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The prayer meeting and youth groups will meet 7 p.m. Wednesdays at the church.

Metropolitan Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Charleston will have a combined fellowship and worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at First Baptist Church, 432 Shrewsbury St., 304-344-4754.
