Colorado oddities and other odd notes

MORGANTOWN - Cleaning out a crowded notebook and a cluttered mind while wondering what it takes to sell out a Colorado football game:

  • As of Tuesday, there were still 2,000 tickets left for Thursday's game between Colorado and West Virginia in Boulder. A year ago, Florida State visited Folsom Field and that one didn't sell out either. Yet CU coach Dan Hawkins still wants to enclose one end of the stadium with additional seats.
  • Go figure.

Morgantown's altitude is 1237 feet, or 377 meters. Don't rely on Wikipedia. It's not a real source, people.

Big East officiating is horrible and the BE pretty much sucks as a conference. I would love to see WVU defect to another conference, say the SEC.

With all the TV timeouts and other stoppages, the altitude shouldn't matter much. It's not like they're running for 60 minutes continuously.

UC was taken, University of Califrnia Berkley, UCLA, Irvine and the rest. Otherwise it would be like UT, Texas (Austin) and Tennessee, same initials same orange and white school colors.

In response to GO BUFFS, being a Colorado native and WVU grad, I think I can speak from experience. I've followed the Buffs since I was small child and have lived in Boulder County since I graduated from WVU in 1999, and I can tell you for a fact that CU football has nothing near the following that WVU does.

West Virginia absolutely loves college football, period. In Colorado, CU is an afterthought and probably, at best, the 4th most watched sports team. More likely the 5th. This is due mostly to the fact that we have the Broncos (easily the #1 choice of not only CO, but the entire mountain west), Nuggets, Avalanche, and Rockies, as well as CSU and Air Force.

Colorado has never supported the Buffs the way West Virginia supports the Mountaineers. In West Virginia, WVU is an identity, as witnessed in the Fiesta Bowl last year. This just isn't the case in CO anywhere outside of Boulder. While I hope the game does sell out, I hope it's with OLD GOLD and BLUE! See you there!

First of all, it is CU and it always has been, the same applies at Kansas-KU, Missouri-MU, Nebraska-NU, Oklahoma-OU and Denver-DU. The only explanation I have is tradition.

Secondly, the tickets were not sold out last year prior to the FSU game but if you would have been there or seen the stadium you would have known that there was not a seat avaliable and they were turning away students because they were so far above capacity.

The altitude will have a small effect but these guys work out and train for this, you are still 5000 feet higher than your campus and the air is thiner.

Good luck on Thursday, its going to be an exciting game.

I believe they were saying that the Big East (not just WVU) has beaten the SEC, ACC, and Big 12 Champs the last 3 seasons. Louisville beat Wake Forest, the ACC champ, the same year WVU beat GTech, the ACC runner up.

Actually Dawg99, Georgia Tech was the ACC runner-ups if my memory serves me correct.

Every year it's the same ol yada yada yada about the Big East being weak . . and, over the past 3 years all we have done in the BCS Bowls is beat the SEC Champs, the ACC Champs & the Big 12 Champs!! Nobody knows how this season will play out, let's just relax & enjoy the ride : )

I've went to Colorado Elk hunting and had people in my ear all teh time about how much tougher it was going to be to breathe. I had absolutely no trouble at all. The only difference I experienced was when our truck crossed over the top of the rockies. It chugged a little bit until the computer reset iteself and adjusted to the atmospheric difference. Bear in mind though that was well past Boulder and way above Boulder's elevation. They'll be fine.

As far as Mr. "We want Rich. We want Rich", you forgot the rest of that........"to take a flying leap!"

    Go Stewy!! Let's go Mountaineers!

Apparently the humidity is a heck of a lot worse at East Carolina than it is at WVU.

Great article overall. I especially liked the logic of your last bullet point...it's something I've been saying for years. Personally the Big 12 has been on my list with the Big Ten as one of the most over-hyped leagues in the nation. They, much like the Big East and especially the ACC, only have a few teams that are "good" at the top and then the rest are mediocre at best. So with that being said, I hate how they are portrayed to be so much better than everyone else. If they really want to compare conference strenghth (which to me can only be compared by the top teams of each conference playing each other in bowl games/out of conference game), they should have a playoff at the end of the year like 1-AA does. Then we will truly know what a "conference's strength" is.

Overall, due to the redistribution of scholarships, the playing field has been almost equalized. How can we tell? Well, just look at how the MAC and smaller conferences are now doing against the "Big 6".

Must be a Big 12 thing, University of Kansas is another one with backwards intials. They have "KU" on their helmets.

Keep in mind that beating K-State will get the big east little credit. They are currently one of the weakest big 12 teams. Virginia is also one of the weaker ACC teams. Even if USF beats NC State next week, they are still only a mid level at beast ACC team getting beat by the best big east team. Pitt over Iowa would be helpful.

The Big East is pretty much shot this year with conf play right around the corner. Especially with everyone probably beating each other up this year. The best scenario is either USF or UCONN going undefeated (guess who my choice would be!!) and the other taking one loss and unfortunately that would leave WV taking 3 loses (ECU, UCONN, USF). The three of them would need to smoke the rest of the conf.
    Go Bulls and Mountaineers

I was born and raise in WV and graduated from WVU. I seem to recall these huge mounds of dirt we called mountains and hills. Granted not mile high mountains but still it is not like you are playing at sea level all the time. Working out in the high humidity will be a plus when going to a drier climate. I think they will be fine. My worries have nothing to do with altitude. I am worried about the execution of the team and how it plays, period.
