Expansion of W.Va. prison to create 40 jobs

WELCH, W.Va. -- McDowell County officials are working to expand the Stevens Correctional Center, a move that will allow the county to house 135 additional state inmates and will create 40 jobs.

McDowell County Economic Development Authority executive director Rachel Lester says the county is in the process of acquiring an existing medical building and a private business as part of the two-phase, $7 million expansion project.

Lester says the expansion of the medium-security prison will help ease the overcrowding in the state's prison system. She says the project is fully supported by the Division of Corrections.

Lawyers make the laws so they can litigate more. Little wonder they need more prisons. Do you suppose the lawyers or police that get caught in crimes will go to these prisons? Hell no, they get to go to country clubs

More prisoners; fewer employees. The employees at Mt. Olive Correctional Center hardly ever get their designated days off. Regular work hours consist of three 12-hour shifts one week; four 12-hour shifts the next week. In between, employees are compelled to work overtime in between these shifts at the will and pleasure of their superiors.

It is entirely too much when an employee is required to work 48 hours in 4 days plus another 12-hour compulsory shift-–leaving employees working many times at least 60 hours in 5 days or one week.

Surely there are laws pertaining to mandatory extra shift work.

Overcrowding prisons a problem? Heck NO.. thats why we have so many repeat offenders.. JAIL IS TO NICE>> IT should be deplorable place to go, should have to sleep on top of each other (figuratively, should not have television, or weight rooms.. Just be 2 meals a day, with water and a bed.. THATS IT.. they will not be in any hurry to return. PLease they are living better than most of us working our behinds off.

More prisons is not the answer. America inprisons more people than any other country. We Americans are not more criminal than other countries. This is just money scam to put our citizens in jail and to build more prisons. Don't you all wonder who they are building the prisons for? The government is putting non violent drug addicts in prison with violent murderers, child molesters and rapists and when those drug addicts get out they will be violent drug addicts that will be a danger to us. They will have learned the violence in prison-Drug addicts need to to to drug rehab.

Isn't it wonderful that we have another prison in the U.S.? Hey, that means more jobs too!! We as a nation have the most prisoners per capita in the world. Isn't that something to be proud of?

A federal prison is also under construction in McDowell Co. Once completed, it should offer somewhere between 350-400 jobs. The bad thing is that alot of these jobs will be filled by current BOP employees looking for a transfer and a change of scenery. These jobs will pay twice the amount that the DOC pays. And will offer more opportunity for advancement.

I am glad that they are offering jobs to that part of our state. The prison system would be cool to work for and the inmates deserve to not be overcrowded. Makes for bad things when men are confined to one area and there are too many attitudes. I am happy that there will be more jobs in WV!!!
