In-state ATV deaths slowing
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Steven Cross' mother says he was a careful ATV rider, someone not likely to take chances.
Margaret Cross believes there was something wrong with the ATV he was riding when, on Friday, Cross crested a hill and sped at full speed, crashing into a tree near Ivydale in Clay County.
Cross is the 30th person in West Virginia to die of ATV-related injuries this year, said Dr. Jim Helmkamp, director of the West Virginia University Injury Control Center.

There could be many, many reasons for this. Slowing economy means that there were probably fewer first time buyers this year of ATVs. Long term owners and previous owners are both more familiar with the capabilities and safe operating procedures for an ATV. Mountaineers, I don't buy the gas increase as a reason. ATVs are not any more expensive to operate than a motorcycle and are far cheaper to operate than a boat. More bang for the buck. Fewer first time operators. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Not as many people were riding atv's due to the gasoline increase...fewer riders fewer accidents
