SYLVESTER - A Boone County miner is in serious condition after an accident today at a Massey Mine in Sylvester, said Jama Jarrett, spokeswoman for the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training.
The 33-year-old from Foster, whose name was not released, was trapped between a continuous miner and the mine wall, Jarrett said.
The man had worked at the Elk Run Roundbottom Powellton Coal Mine for about a year and a half, she said. He has over five years mining experience, she said.
He was taken by HealthNet to CAMC General Hospital. The accident happened about 11:45 a.m., Jarrett said.
The Roundbottom mine opened in 2006 and had 50 violations last year, Jarrett said.
"They ranged from paperwork to electrical, to general safety and coal dust," she said. "This year they had 41 violations. They paid all their assessments. They are up to date with that."
The mine has 82 employees, up from 61 last year, Jarrett said. State inspectors were looking over the accident site today, she said.
