WVU may double, triple salary for next president

MORGANTOWN - West Virginia University may double, or even triple the salary for its next president.

Raymond Cotton, a national expert on salaries paid to college and university presidents, says outgoing President Mike Garrison's $255,000 salary ranks in the lowest 10 percent nationwide.

The Chronicle of Higher Education says the median salary for university leaders is just under $400,000.

Several lawmakers and members of WVU's governing board agree a more lucrative compensation package is needed to attract quality candidates. But several also say their first priority is finding an interim president.

Garrison is resigning in September after a year in office to end a controversy surrounding the improper awarding of a master's degree to the governor's daughter.

Excellent news. WVU has found the $$$s to be competitive with our peer instituions on the playing field by hiring top-tier coaches, and I support that. The national recognition of our athletic programs has a positive carryover to the university as a whole. But, it is time to leverage that recognition and find the $$$s to enhance our academic reputation, and a top-notch president is the first step.

The prefect solution to the WVU president's salary: Take just a very small portion of Lang's, Macia's, and and all other's salaries who were the guilty parties in the Bresch scenario and add to the present presidential salary. Equal treatment for all the WVU underpriviledged.

If the average pay for comparable schools is 400k, then the president is right in line with the rest of the faculty and staff at wvu, making about 60% of what he/she should.

Hey WVU get in line. State employees, teachers, and all working people in this state make in the bottom range for pay. Why should the president of the school be special.
