APCO to buy electricity from Greenbrier wind farm

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Appalachian Power Co. plans to buy electricity from a wind farm that's being developed in Greenbrier County.

Appalachian Power's parent, Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power, announced the 20-year purchase agreement with Beech Ridge Energy LLC on Thursday.

AEP says Appalachian Power plans to buy between and 100 and 147 megawatts, the entire output of the 186-megawatt project's first phase.

The deal is subject to approval from the state Public Service Commission. AEP says it also hinges on renewal of the federal production tax credit for renewable energy for 2009.

AEP declined to say how much it would pay for the electricity, saying the pricing terms are confidential.

Appalachian Power serves 1 million customers in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee.

J & cwills, we can cure these problems without wrecking our ecomomy. Are you in bed with McCain and his plan to build 45 nukes and moving away from fossil fuels? (Of course he doesn't say that while campaigning here, does he?)
Burning carbon creates CO2, not hydrogen & there is plenty of hydrogen in coal. Extracting & burning the hydrogen rich volatiles in the coal at powerhouses would severely cut man-made carbon pollution while creating a greatly expanded market for our state's high volatile coal. The excess production can be sold as motor fuel and chemical feedstock.
We then need to return to underground mining with expanded safety & environmental rules and real enforcement while putting the residual coke and flyash back into the mined out areas to avoid subsidence and aid in more complete removal of the coal.
This plan has jobs, better national security, CO2 reduction, and elimination of massive mountain top removal mines. Citizens, coal producers & environmentalists all win.

Lets see, a typical power plant puts out between 3 and 4 billion kilowatt hours of electricity a year, there are x number of power plants, there are only a couple wind farms, and people keep raising heck about them, even the environazis.......mighty small nails, better get a big bag of those nails, your going to be mining LOTS of coal for many years to come.
