Betty Loftis Buscher

 

Betty Loftis Buscher born on May 31, 1932, went home to be with the Lord on May 15, 2008, after an extended illness while surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm “Bud” Buscher; mother, Bertha Miller; and grandson, Matthew Gregory Kight.

She is survived by her children, who loved her dearly, and their spouses, Rodney and Shonette Loftis of Charleston, Judith Mullen of Cross Lanes, Robert and Wendy Coe-Loftis of Charleston, Gregory and Ruth Loftis of Nitro, Benjamin and Regina Loftis and Gary Loftis, all of Charleston; grandchildren, Ginger Barrick and her husband, Jason, and great- grandsons, Isaiah and Matthew Barrick, Sean Loftis and his wife, Mandi, and great-granddaughters, Jade and Gabbie Loftis, Jennifer Mullen-Thaxton and her husband, Christopher, Rodney Loftis II and great-granddaughter, Sierra Loftis, Sara Loftis, Cathy Loftis and great-grandson, Aidin Loftis and step-granddaughter, Dawn Walker.

She is survived by the following siblings, brothers, Austin Miller of Charleston, Herb Fitzsimmons of Nitro, Art “Butch” Miller of Phoenix City, Ala.; surviving sisters, Bonnie Mooney of St. Albans, Nellie Harper of Charleston and “sisters in spirit,” Toni Millar and Jackie Baker of The Villages, Fla.; a special cousin, Brenda Vilkins of South Charleston; and many nieces and nephews.

Left to treasure her memory are her dear friends, Roberta Jacks, Stan and Anna Cadd of The Villages, Fla., as well as many other friends and family including Bonnie Pugh of Sissonville.

Betty was the former owner of BB's Pizza Place, Charleston, a Red-Hatter and world traveler who loved to host dinner parties. She has lived alternately in Florida, Missouri and West Virginia since 1973. She was involved in fund-raising for Make A Wish Foundation.

Betty was an avid gardener who was happiest and felt “closest to God” in her garden.

A special thanks to her caregivers, Erin Haynes and niece, Bobbie Kay Goins. A heartfelt thank you from the family to Hospice, especially Carol Means and Sherry Stouffer.

Celebration of Betty's life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. John Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in her name to HospiceCare, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064, or Make a Wish Foundation, 623 Lee St. West, Charleston, WV 25302.

Kathryn Arlene Cloutier, 65, of Wallback entered into rest May 14, 2008, at her home.

Born on Oct. 1, 1943, at Indiana, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Blair and Dorothy Smith. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, Danny Smith; brother, Jake Smith; and sister, Thelma Smith.

She was the former owner of the Family Restaurant in Clay and a member of the Risen Lord Catholic Church in Maysel.

Survivors include her husband, Camillen J. “Frenchie” Cloutier of Wallback; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Chasity Cloutier of Spencer; daughters and son-in-law, Brenda and Thomas Lyons Jr. of Ivydale, and Marieanna Bourne of South Charleston; daughter-in-law, Shalma Smith of Duck; stepchildren, Claudette Cloutier, Linda Cloutier, André Cloutier, Martin Cloutier, Guylaine Cloutier and Chantal Cloutier; brothers, Blaine, Homer and John Smith; sisters, Mary Lou Mauk, Arvilla Koran, Sandy Cornman, Gloria Fairbanks and Betty Smith; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the Risen Lord Catholic Church, Maysel. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. with Father Elmer Nadicksbernd officiating. Burial will follow at the Smith Family Cemetery, Duck.

Julia Elizabeth “Judy” Daniel, 84, of St. Albans passed away May 16, 2008, at CAMC.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bob Daniel; parents, William and Kathryn Evans Holloway; brothers, Lester and Bill Holloway; and sisters, Annie Belle Holloway and Ellender Forest.

Judy was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church in St. Albans. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a true Southern Belle!

Daphne Lynne Dean

 

Daphne L. Young Dean, 43, of Dunbar, died suddenly on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 10, 1964, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was employed by the CAMC Credit Union for 26 years.

Daphne was a devout Christian and was a Sunday school teacher and treasurer at the West Dunbar Community Church. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Matt and Lilly Young; maternal grandparents, Harold and Bernadine Crank; uncle Donald Crank; father-in-law, Arley “Jack” Dean; and by her niece, Marchel Guthrie.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 20 years, David W. Dean; son, Matthew David at home; parents, the Rev. Doyle D. and Jane Young of Dunbar; sisters, Vicky and Paul Foster of St. Albans and Jessica and David Chandler of Dunbar; nephew, Noah Christopher Chandler of Dunbar; mother-in-law, Judy Dean of Charleston; sister-in-law, Judith Ann and Wayne Guthrie of Charleston; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. James Phillips and the Rev. Allen Young officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park. Friends may call at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Ronald J. Engle

 

Ronald Engle, beloved and devoted father and husband, entered into the arms of his loving Savior after a sudden illness on Thursday, May 15, 2008.

He was previously a long-time member of Heritage Baptist Church with years of service. Ron was a graduate of Elkview High School in 1961 and Marshall University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. After retiring with 25 years of service for the WV Air Pollution Control Commission as Chief Chemist and Lab Supervisor, he worked 15 years for Test, Inc. as a laboratory director.

He loved hunting, playing golf, playing the guitar, and walking in the great outdoors.

Ronald was born on Jan. 28, 1944, and was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph C. and Alpha L. Engle of Pinch.

Surviving are wife, Jane Engle of Big Chimney; daughter, Lynn Engle-LaNeve and husband, Michael, of Elkview; brothers, Jim Engle of Chesterfield, Va., Rex Engle of Houston, Texas, Roger Engle of Charleston.

There are no words to express the adoration and love he always had for his family. His very essence showed a quiet compassion and strength from deep within.

Ron will always be greatly missed by family and friends, leaving them with precious memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Hafer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Frank Schaffer officiating. Burial will follow at the Engle Family Cemetery, Corton.

Born on Feb. 11, 1929, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Ella Evans Fitzwater.

He retired from Elkem Metals; was an Army veteran, having served during the Korean Era; and was a member of the Lizemores Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Radie Lee Young Fitzwater; children, John (Debbie) of Elkview, Joe (Charlotte) of Indore, Jim (Joy) of Indore and Beverly (Gary) King of Maysel; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Howard Mark Hartley

 

Howard Mark Hartley, 54, of Charleston, formerly of Kingwood, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the home of his father at the Preston Country Club.

Mark was born Nov. 24, 1953, in Morgantown, and was a son of Howard Ray Hartley and wife, Shirley, of Kingwood, and Eleanor Degolyer Harvey and husband, Ben, of Kingwood.

He was a drill operator for Catenary Coal Company at the Samples Mine in Kanawha County for 22 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Preston and Kanawha Counties and the Moose Club in Charleston.

He is survived by one son, Jacob Smith Hartley and companion, Shelly, of Kingwood; one brother and spouse, Jeff and Tracey Hartley of Morgantown; one sister and spouse, Tammy Jo and Jeffery Wiles of Craigsville; one stepbrother and spouse, John “Jack” and Kimberly Wilkinson of Charleston; three nieces and spouses, JoBeth and Dave Johnson, Briane and Ashby Hayes, all of Monroeville, Pa., Rachel Wiles of Craigsville; two nephews, Mitchell Hartley and Christopher Hartley, both of Morgantown; two great-nephews and one great-niece; close friends, Karen Stover, Amber Stover, Austin Stover, Brandon Stover and Madison Hill, all of Charleston.

In addition to his paternal and maternal grandparents, he was preceded in death by his stepsister, Lee Anne Wilkinson.

She was born Nov. 18, 1924, in Richwood. She was a member of Little Laurel Baptist Church, Richwood.

Survivors include daughter, Ellen and husband, Brian Harvey, of Bethesda, Md., and two grandsons, Alex and Andrew Harvey.

Cleo P. Lacy, 83, entered into eternal peace May 14, 2008, after a long illness in Lake Butler, Fla. She was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Burnwell, to the late Walter R. and Minnie (Kees) Prichard of Marmet.

Cleo will always be remembered by her family and friends as a strong, loving, and devoted mother. Her capacity to overcome hardship with grace and goodwill was an inspiration to all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Cleo was preceded in death by her beloved son, James David Lacy and her brother, Robert “Bob” Prichard of Marmet.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Beverly A. Frampton and husband, Denver, of Lake Butler, Fla.; sons, Robert H. Lacy and wife, Ann, of McCormick, S.C., Paul R. Lacy and wife, Donna, of Virginia Beach, Va., Lowell M. Lacy and Danny J. Lacy of Chesapeake; brothers, Walter R. Prichard Jr. of Smithfield, Tenn., Fred J. Prichard and wife, Dorothy, of Melbourne, Fla.; and sisters, Ann Holmes and husband, Bill, of Ravenswood, and Jane Ryan and husband, Dave, of Escondido, Calif. Cleo also leaves behind nine loving grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends Monday evening between 6 and 8 p.m. at Leonard Johnson Funeral Home in Marmet. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Chesapeake Apostolic Church in Chesapeake, where Cleo was a longtime member. Calvin F. Martin

 

Calvin F. Martin, 82, of Statesville, N.C., formerly of Beckley, was called to his eternal home to be with his Lord and Savior following a lengthy battle of cancer.

Calvin was born June 15, 1925, in St. Albans. He was the son of the late Wayland Harbor Martin and Carrie Emma Barnette Martin.

Upon graduating from St. Albans High School in 1943, Calvin served in the 8th Army Air Corps in England during World War II. After returning home from service in 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, the late Betty Jane Good.

Calvin was a 40-year member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of St. Albans. He retired in 1986 from C&P Telephone Company of WV.

Calvin was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Alice Buetow of Winchester, Va., Verna Mae Jacobs of St. Albans, and by two brothers, William H. Martin of Denver, Colo., and Giles Newman Martin of St. Albans.

He is survived by three children, Mark S. (Drema) Martin of Beckley, Michael B. (Tresa) Martin of Matthews, N.C., and Melinda M. (James) Blevins of Statesville, N.C.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Teays Hill Cemetery in St. Albans. The service will be officiated by Calvin's grandson, the Rev. Brandon Blevins.

Ms. Dorothy A. Maruish, 91, of Nitro passed away May 16, 2008, after a long illness.

Ms. Maruish has been a resident of Nitro since 1953; retired from WV Department of Mines with 37 years of service; member of the Nitro Women's Club, Nitro Senior Citizens and Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and wife, Anna Maruish; brother, Peter Maruish and sister, Katherine Detamore.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Maruish of Nitro and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Rey Landicho officiating. Entombment will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Roger Burl Pettry, 57, of Gettysburg, Pa., formerly of Cabin Creek, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, after a short illness.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was an employee of Shire Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for several years.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Carl B. Pettry, and his younger brother, Michael W. Pettry Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Dana Pettry of Rhonda; sister, Heather Ramsey of Miami; nieces, Stephanie Nelson, Alinay, Jenna, Carlee and Regen Ramsey; great-nieces, Victoria Nelson and Rayvenn Pettry; nephew, Michael W. Pettry Jr.; and great-nephews, Luke Pettry, Connar Nelson, Nick, Stefan and Lee Burgess. Roger had a very large family and many friends, who loved him and will miss him.

Virginia Flick Phares, beloved mother of Diana Lynn Rustemeyer of Reston, Va., and Pamela June Phares of Charleston, sister of Chester A. Flick of Elkview, and grandmother of Marnie Amber Rustemeyer of New York City, found her place in heaven the morning of May 14, 2008. She was born on June 6, 1920, in Spencer, and spent most of her life in Charleston with her husband of 52 years, Earl Lynn Phares.

As a mother and grandmother, she gave unwavering inspiration, encouragement, hope, patience, devotion and love. “Aunt Jenny” and “Granny” to family and friends, Virginia was a caring, giving, and supportive friend to all who knew her. She was a devout Christian, a member of First Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Women's Club.

Virginia started and was the leader of the first Girl Scout Troop for Retarded girls in West Virginia. She was active in Special Olympics, both on the state and local levels for many years and was Secretary for the Kanawha County Special Olympics Advisory Council. Virginia dedicated freely her time and support to the advancement of individuals with special needs.

Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday evening, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. and funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home. Interment will be at Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens.

Virginia has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Kanawha County Special Olympics or the Rainbow Class at First Presbyterian Church. Your contribution will exercise a compassionate call to stewardship and support people with special needs.

Elsie L. Thomas, 93, of Griffithsville, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Cuba Thomas, after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Thomas; two sisters, Jewel and Bonnie; and two brothers, Walton and Orville.

She was a member of the Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Sod, and a retired elementary school teacher for Lincoln County with 40 years of service.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Paul and Cuba Thomas of Griffithsville; granddaughter,

Paula Denise Pauley (Tony Hager) of Charleston; grandson and his wife, Rickey R. and Christi Thomas of Arizona; sister, Mabel Mason of North Carolina; two brothers, Eldon “Buddy” and Wilford Smith of Beckley; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Robert Leadman officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burl H. Valentine

 

Burl H. Valentine, 93, of Vienna, died May 14, 2008, at Ohio Valley Health Care.

He was born in Roane County on March 2, 1915, a son of the late Harley Lee and Dora Meadows Valentine. A graduate of Duval High School, he attended Business College in Charleston and retired from Pennzoil Company with 42 years of service.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Kathleen Shimp Valentine; daughters, Kathryn Sue Moore of Parkersburg and Phyllis Ann Spurlock of Beckley; three grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Maxine Smith of Wheeling; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Emmitt W. Valentine.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna, with Father David Huffman officiating. Burial will be in the Liverpool Cemetery, Jackson County. Visitation hours are from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Arthur Lee Woods

 

Arthur Lee Woods was born Feb. 5, 1959, to the late Delphine C. Woods.

He departed this life on May 11, 2008, at the age of 49.

He was a resident of Charleston all of his life and graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School.

He leaves to cherish his memory a son, Monte Taylor; several stepchildren; grandchild, Fontain Nelson; sisters, Lisa Epps and Myrtle Woods; brothers, Julian Woods, Thomas Woods, Robert Hunt, Richard Gilmore, Paul Woods and James Morrow, all of Charleston.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Liberty Baptist Church, Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
